Fishing Report Waubay/Pickerel S.D
We headed north for Superbowl weekend with 16 guys this year. After a 6 1/2 hour drive through the night, we crashed for a couple hours at the lodge and headed out on Friday morning. Our first lake of choice was a little slough straight East of the town of Waubay. Three perch later, we decided to head somewhere else. Last year we caught ginormous walleye on Reetze lake straight south of Webster. This year, there is 3′ of snow on the lake and no access except for snowmobile. We turned around and headed for Pickerel Lake hoping to catch a few crappie or walleye in the evening. One walleye, a couple crappie and a couple perch later, we were ready to call it a day. Saturday we fished a slough near Roslyn and the Waubay refuge. The refuge ended up producing 4 walleye for us, but nothing of any size. Sunday we headed back to Pickerel and ended up with 8 crappie and a perch. The most fun I had the entire trip was seeing two huge pike just under our ice holes. We pulled the camera up just under the ice and watched them circle around a smelt for at least 15 minutes. One of them finally grabbed the smelt and the short fight was on. I fought him for a couple minutes and he ended up straightening my treble hook and swam off. We ended up seeing a guy who caught a 9 lb walleye on Pickerel, but the only access to anywhere except the N end of the lake is by snowmobile only. 4 wheelers with chains were getting buried up there. My best advice for anyone going is to bring a shovel for everyone in your truck and if you can beg, or borrow a snowmobile, take it. The drifts of snow up there are incredible.
